I get out of my car, stretch and walk into the convenience store to look for a cashier-a plus-sized Native American woman with a jet-black ponytail and permanent scowl whose name I’ve never learned. Whether or not I’m short on gas, I always pull into the Love’s truck stop on the outskirts of town, just before the junction with Interstate 8. I will talk to the manager tomorrow and arrange to have them sent to me.I missed the scent of orange blossoms that hung heavy in the air each spring or the dirty smell of wet asphalt that all desert dwellers associate with summer monsoons. Then in my brain fog this morning, I left my rings on the counter in the room, and when I called this afternoon, they had found them and put them in the safe for me. Nobody messed with the van full of my stuff. The bed was comfortable, and the room clean with everything I needed (even earplugs for the train that passes by several times a night!) I had to open the window of the van I was driving full of household items I was moving to my new home in order to get my overnight bag out, and when I came out this morning, saw that I had left the window down all night. I was really glad to be able to rest before continuing on to Tucson and Sierra Vista. When I stopped there for the night last night, I was exhausted. I am super grateful for the honest folks at the Best Western Space Age Lodge in Gila Bend, Arizona. B) As I walked, several people along the way smiled, waved, and demanded I have a nice day. A) It's a hallucinatory experience, one weird, weird place. Also, we had plenty of time to "explore" Gila Bend, and I took a morning walk all the way up and down the main street, right after dawn. CURRENTLY, the guys at the front desk are great and totally helpful. This place has changed hands several times recently, and at this writing is for sale again. The train runs right behind the motel (and everything else in Gila Bend), and management, I swear to heaven, puts fresh earplugs in little packets in each room. The rooms are equipped with pre-World War II window air conditioners, and the two days we were in Gila Bend the temperature was 114 and 115, so in summer expect the a/c to run loudly and continuously, although, to be fair, it does cool the room. The rooms themselves are as clean as you can get anything that old, and the little fridge worked. It's fun to take pictures of the sign and the outside of the entrance to the lobby, but that about wraps up the grins and giggles. The Space Age Lodge was unpleasantly expensive, and very little of the "Space Age" part ends up inside the rooms. Through a bizarre chain of circumstances we got stuck in Gila Bend for two nights.
